Texas Governor Signs Law Allowing Faith-Based Adoption Agencies To Reject Gay Couples, Non-Christians
Texas has just joined a growing list of states that have passed legislation allowing faith-based adoption and foster care agencies to reject same-sex parents and non-Christians.
Child welfare providers will be able to reject potential adoptions based on “sincerely held religious beliefs”. Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 3859 into law on Thursday.
Writes the Texas Tribune:
Similar legislation has become law in Michigan, North Dakota, South Dakota and Virginia.
“This law was never about the best interests of Texans or of children, but about forwarding a political agenda to codify the permission to discriminate against LGBTQ Texans into state law,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, president of GLAAD, in a statement.
“Discrimination has won in Texas, and it saddens me that a child can now be denied the chance to live with a deserving family simply because they are LGBTQ.”
Earlier this month, we reported on the governor of Alabama signing a very similar bill into law.
