We are American.
It is not a good feeling to suddenly see a government turn on it’s own people. This country’s government establishment was founded on the representation of its citizens. Even as times change, the President, Congress, and the Judicial branch have attempted to make the best choices even under stressful situations. But what has occurred just a day or so ago, is unacceptable.
The 45th President of these United States, whom has no social or military experience policy wise or at all, barred Transgender folk from serving in the military.
For those that are unfamiliar, Transgender is a person whose “ …gender identity does not correspond to that person’s biological sex assigned at birth” — Dictionary.com. It is also represented by the flag above, and Transgender is the “T” in LGBTQ+.
It seems as though the governing dislike this new idea of changing gender, and have responded to this minority of people by imposing “bathroom bills” and other assorted restrictions. Now the term minority is a little broad, there are approximately 1.4 million Transgender adults in the United States. To put that in perspective, there are about 325 million human beings in the USA total.
Going back to the military issue about banning Transgenders, the current reasoning for this decision is because of the cost of covering medical procedures. According to a USA TODAY article, “ The RAND Corp., a non-partisan think tank commissioned by the Pentagon to study the issue, found that only a few hundred of the estimated 6,600 transgender troops would seek medical treatment in any year. RAND found those costs would total no more than $8 million per year.” This is compared to the approximately 60 billion dollar budget for the defense department, and — this is true — they have spent about $41.6 million on just Viagra. It is somewhat ironic that they would allow one form of hormone enhancement, Viagra, and not allow medical procedures for Transgenders in transition.
But nothing is set in stone, in fact, top military officials have said that they will not act on the issue until proper procedures are followed. The President can not just tweet about something, and then have it immediately executed into the law of the land. Government is not as simple as typing 140 characters per tweet.
And so I applaud any and all Transgender people out there, whether you are open about being Transgender or not. I send y’all my best wishes and I have hope that the governing see this is wrong and find ways to mend this divide that has plagued the politics, economics, and culture of this country.
We are all American, whether you are Transgender, male, female, gay, lesbian, straight, queer, and everything in between. We are all American, we are all human.
