Selena Gomez Had Kidney Transplant, Friend Donated Organ
Selena Gomez underwent a kidney transplant earlier this summer, receiving the organ from close friend and fellow actress Francia Raisa. Following months of extensive testing, most of Gomez’s immediate family were unable to donate, allowing Raisa to help with the life-saving procedure after it was determined she was a successful match for the surgery.
As Gossip Cop reported, Gomez revealed in 2015 she had been battling lupus, a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage the skin, joints and organs. That same year, she opened up for the first time about her illness in a Billboard cover story, explaining how lupus temporarily sidelined her career. The singer shared, “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke.”
Gomez has since recovered from the kidney transplant surgery, and just began shooting for her role in Woody Allen’s upcoming and untitled movie, reports TheBlast. The star has also been attending events associated with New York Fashion Week to promote the launch of her new Coach Selena Grace bag.
As it was widely reported, Gomez canceled her “Revival World Tour” in 2016 to focus on her health. She said in a statement to People, “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.” Gomez further noted, “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.”
It was later revealed that Gomez was funding lupus research at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. The singer-actress made a generous donation to the school to start the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research, and the money helped support a pilot program which contributed to the research into treating lupus complications. Gossip Cop has reached out to Gomez’s rep for a comment and more information on her kidney transplant.
