“The View” Does One Chip Challenge With Sunny Hostin
“The View” took part in the viral “One Chip Challenge” on Tuesday, with Sunny Hostin trying what is said to be the hottest chip of all time. Watch the video below!
The chip was created by the snack company Paqui, which started selling its new item with just one chip per a bag. While only one? That’s all people can handle, if even that, with the unprecedented level of spice. The chip’s intense flavor comes from the Carolina Reaper Pepper, which is the hottest pepper known to man. According to Guinness, in 2013 it was determined that pepper has an average of 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units, compared to 2,500 to 8,000 SHU for the average jalapeno. To repeat: That’s a hotness factor of more than 1.5 million compared to 8,000.
As for the actual challenge, it typically involves someone being filmed as they bravely try to eat the chip. In October, a number of newscasters took part for the sake of participation journalism, with one actually throwing up on camera. And just last week, Shaquille O’Neal made a $20 bet with Charles Barkley that he wouldn’t make any kind of reaction face while taking a taste. He was successful… at first. Kristen Bell and Michael Pena also filmed their hilarious attempts for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
Now on the ABC talk show, Sara Haines donned googles before Hostin took the challenge, cracking, “If this goes airborne, I don’t want any of that near me.” And Joy Behar also left her seat to avoid being a potential vomit target. Hostin, who said it was her son who suggested she try it because of her love for hot sauce, looked nervous as she shoved the chip into her mouth. It seemed to affect her immediately, and she noted, “This is not a flavor.” But she was “handling it,” even as the strong heat prompted her to leave her chair and walk around. Referring to the beverages that were waiting for her, she confidently stated, “I don’t need all of this.”
In fact, Hostin went on to eat a second chip, prompting the audience to start chanting, “Sunny! Sunny!” Whoopi Goldberg, however, warned her colleagues to step aside if Hostin needs to pass gas, because she could shoot a “flame across the stage.” Check out the “The View” video below, along with the editions featuring Shaq, Bell and Pena.
