Marvel Comics’ Stan Lee Accused of Sexual Harassment in Extortion Plot
Stan Lee, whose real name is Stanley Lieber, is one of the major creative forces behind pretty much all of Marvel Comics. Lee, along with Joe Simon, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and Stan’s younger brother Larry Lieber, created pretty much every character you’ve seen in a Marvel movie. Stan Lee has always been the face of Marvel Comics, and he has made a cameo appearance is almost every movie Marvel Studios has produced. He was even in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies despite Groot, Kraglin and Ego, The Living Planet being the only characters he had a hand in creating.
Now 95 years old, Stan the Man is the victim of an extortion scheme involving him allegedly harassing his home-care nurses. According to a report published by the Daily Mail, Lee’s lawyer’s sent a cease and desist letter last month to a company that used to provide 24-hour in-home nursing care to Lee for making defamatory statements about Lee.
Apparently, rather than go to the police or the media or file a civil action when Stan Lee allegedly groped nurses and requested they perform sex acts on him, the nursing company asked Lee to write a big check to keep them from going to the media. Which is extortion. So yeah.
The Daily Mail had some quotes from an anonymous source on Lee’s alleged behavior. Keep in mind these only came to light after Lee refused to pay hush money to this anonymous nursing company.
‘He walks around naked and is vulgar towards the women, he asks them for oral sex in the shower and wants to be pleasured in his bedroom. He uses the word pussy and fuck in their presence. He’s also very handsy and has groped some of the women, it’s unacceptable behavior, especially from an icon like Stan.’
I’m going to be real with you for a minute, I don’t even care if these allegations are true. Stan Lee is 95 and the worst thing he’s been accused of before this is taking credit for stuff Jack Kirby did. Stan the Man appears to still be pretty spry when makes public appearances and film cameos in Marvel films, but he’s an old, old man. People lose their faculties when they age, and even if every word this nursing company said in their extortion attempt is true, my reaction is “it’s a shame Stan Lee started to lose himself in his old age.” My opinion of him as a person and as a creative force are completely unchanged.
And in truth, though I’m not sure I believe these allegations, I don’t find them particularly unbelievable. People change when they get older. No one’s mind works the way it did when they were young, and the ability to filter your words and actions is invariably one of the things that goes. So even if Stan Lee did act inappropriately around his nurses, well, that’s something that happened to him, not something he did.
In the end, however, nurses should be trained to deal with this sort of thing with elderly patients. Seeing old people naked, listening to them say dumb shit… that’s part of what elder care is. A representative from Lee’s new nursing company, Vitale Nursing, Inc, was quoted as saying Lee is “polite, kind and respectful” and that “It has been a privilege to care for him.” And I find that even easier to believe than the anonymous rumors spread by the people trying to blackmail him.
