Though temperatures are hovering in the upper 50s, New Yorkers woke to heavy rain, gusty winds and flood warnings and advisories Monday morning.

The rain, along with a few thunderstorms, are expected to remain for much of the day, mainly before 9 p.m., the National Weather Service forecasted, with nighttime temperatures dropping to a low of 42.

A flood advisory is in effect until 10:30 a.m. for parts of northeastern New Jersey and southeastern New York, including Newark, Jersey City, Jamaica, Flatbush, Flushing, Mott Haven, Hoboken and East Tremont.

A flash flood warning is also in effect until 11:15 a.m. for those same regions, which means that “flooding is imminent or occurring,” the NWS said. “If you are in the warned area, move to higher ground immediately.”

Some New York City commuters shared photos and video of their flooded journey through the city’s transit system. One particular video showed water gushing down the steps of an MTA station, flooding the platform area.

Additionally, the NWS’s Doppler radar showed strong thunderstorms are expected over the waters of the New York metro region, from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Fire Island Inlet on Long Island. Mariners can expect gusty winds around 30 knots, higher waves, lightning and heavy downpours.

“Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until these storms pass,” the NWS warned.

To that end, the NYC Ferry’s Rockaway route has been suspended until further notice due to extremely high winds. Its East and West shuttle bus routes have been redirected to drop passengers off at the Beach 105 Street train station.

While there are no subway delays due to the inclement weather, the Staten Island Railway is suspended between Tottenville and Huguenot in both directions because of flooding at Richmond Valley. The MTA is providing alternate shuttle bus service.

The weather is causing delays on some bus routes in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx as well.
