More Than 50 People Were Shot in Chicago This Weekend

Late Saturday night, seven people were wounded in another mass shooting, this one at a park in Chicago. One of the individuals that was shot during the incident around 1:20 am is in critical condition.

A few hours later, another mass shooting took place in a different part of the city. Seven people were wounded and one was killed.

So far no one has been taken into custody for either shooting.

Throughout the area at least seven people were killed in shootings over the weekend, and 46 more were injured.

The violence was so bad that local hospitals became overwhelmed attempting to treat victims. At one point Chicago’s Mount Sinai Hospital was forced to stop accepting patients and went on what is known as “bypass,” meaning ambulance drivers were instructed to go to other hospitals, because the emergency room was at capacity following the shootings.

In an address to the press, Police Chief Eddie T. Johnson said, “You have to stop yourself and ask what will it take before we get a handle on what’s going on, not only in Chicago, but across the country,” addressing the mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, that killed at least 29 people and wounded dozens more.

“From police departments to the court systems to prosecutors to legislators—we have to come together and figure out more common-sense solutions to these problems because clearly too many of our citizens are being shot and killed,” Johnson said.
