Warner Chappell Music U.K. Promotes Amber Davis to Head Of A&R

Amber Davis has been promoted to head of A&R at Warner Chappell Music U.K., reporting to managing director Mike Smith.

Formerly A&R director, London-based Davis is responsible for signing some of the U.K.’s biggest grime artists — including Skepta, J Hus, Dave and Stormzy — to the publisher.

Skepta’s self-released album Konnichiwa beat David Bowie, Radiohead and The 1975 to win the 2016 Mercury Prize with his follow-up record, Ignorance Is Bliss, hitting No. 2 earlier this year.

J Hus and Dave have also been nominated for the Mercury Prize, while Stormzy’s 2017 debut Gang Signs And Prayer was the first grime album to top the British charts and collected best album at last year’s Ivor Novello Awards.

London singer-songwriter Raye, who Davis also signed to Warner Chappell, is best known for appearing on the Jax Jones hit “You Don’t Know Me” and wrote the track “Bigger,” which features on Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift album. Her songs have been streamed over 1.2 billion times, says the publisher.

Other songwriters Davis supports include B Young, Celeste, DJ Spinall, Dyo, Katy B, Odunsi (The Engine), Ssega, Steel Banglez, Swifta and Tom Zanetti.

“The songwriters we have are what make our business thrive and to work with some of the most talented writers and managers in the business and represent their songs is a real privilege,” says Davis, who joined the publisher from Sony ATV in 2014 and begins her new role Oct. 1.

“Amber’s one of the standout A&Rs of her generation and yet one of the most modest people you’ll ever meet. Her role in the U.K. urban scene cannot be underestimated,” praised Mike Smith in a statement. He added: “I can’t wait to see what she achieves in this new role.”

Co-chair and CEO of Warner Chappell Music Guy Moot first worked with Davis over a decade ago when he was running EMI Music Publishing and she joined the company as an A&R assistant. Moot said her A&R skills were obvious from the start of her career.

“I knew then that she had the drive, determination and diligence to go far, as well as a real feel for how to help songwriters fulfil their potential,” said Moot, adding, “I’m so pleased to be working with her again and supporting her as she grows and leads her talented team.”
