Tisn’t far off the season where supermarkets begin stocking selection boxes in months-long preparation for Yuletide. And to celebrate, Universal has dropped a trailer for this year’s upcoming festive feelgood movie, Last Christmas – a rom-com “inspired by a George Michael beat”.
Directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy) and written by playwright Bryony Kimmings and Emma Thompson – who also appears in front of the camera – the film tells the story of Kate (Game Of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke), a troubled soul who works as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop in London. As the most wonderful time of the year approaches, she bumps into nice-guy Tom (Crazy Rich Asians‘ Henry Golding) and an unexpected case of ‘opposites attract’ unfolds… all soundtracked by the songs of the late George Michael and Wham! (including the titular banger and some previously unreleased GM tracks).
You can watch the trailer below…
It might be cheesier than a Monterey Jack Mini Cheddar (seriously, check them out), but the trailer looks suitably Christmassy and a likeable Clarke seems absolutely game for the festivities, even if Golding is saddled with some clunky dire-logue (“There’s no such thing as normal…Just being a human being is hard”). It even manages to make a festively lit Oxford Street look fairly magical (as anyone who has tried to do a spot of last-minute Christmas shopping on London’s busiest high street can attest, it really isn’t).
Elsewhere, the eminently watchable Thompson and Michelle Yeoh, playing Clarke’s Christmas-shop boss, look like they’ll be stealing the majority of the scenes they’re in (“Hey, elf!”).
Feeling Christmassy yet? No doubt you will be starting to when the film is released in UK cinemas on 15 November. We have a feeling we’ll be filing this one under “guilty pleasure”.
