The administration has been struggling from fall out over the trade war with China. Retailers are anxious about tariffs against China that were supposed to take effect in September. The administration has pushed back the tariffs to December 15 in response.
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said that the tariff delay was meant to help consumers before Christmas. By saying so, he revealed that tariffs do in fact hurt the consumer.
Trump and his allies understand that the president needs a strong economy to help his presidential campaign. One former senior official from the White House said, “He’s running out of tools” to boost the economy.
Another former senior White House official said, “Continued economic expansion is not a given. Most of the benefits from Trump’s tax cuts and regulatory relief have already taken effect.”
