Woman Receives Year In Jail For Throwing Puppies Into Trash Can

CBS News reports that in April, a woman in Coachella, California was caught on a security camera throwing seven newborn puppies into a dumpster. On Wednesday, Deborah Sue Culwell, 54, pleaded guilty to animal abuse and animal abandonment.

Culwell, who originally pleaded not guilty but then later plead guilty, was sentenced to 385 days in county jail. 275 of those days will be spent in custody and 90 of those days will be spent on a work release according to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

Once she is released, she could be sentenced to seven years of formal probation. During this period she will not be allowed to own any animals.

On the security footage, Culwell threw a plastic bag with the 7 terrier mixes, who were 3-days-old, into a dumpster.

Soon after Culwell threw the puppies away, a man went through the dumpsters and spotted the puppies. Local police quickly took the puppies to animal services.

Animal services said that if the puppies had not been found when they were, they likely wouldn’t have survived in the 90-degree heat.

“There is no excuse for dumping puppies,” Riverside County Animal Service Commander Chris Mayer said. “Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. This was a shameful act.”
