Confirming recent rumors, Variety reports tonight that a brand new installment in The Matrix franchise is indeed in the works, with Lana Wachowski on board to both write and direct!
Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be back, reprising the roles of Neo and Trinity.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana,” said Warner Bros.’ Toby Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”
“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” Wachowski said.
Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell wrote the new script with Wachowski.
The Wachowski sisters, Lana and Lily, directed all three previous installments in the franchise, released between 1999 and 2003. The franchise has generated $3 billion in revenue.
