Telecom Companies Make Pact To Stop Illegal Robocalls

Large telecom companies and attorneys general from every state announced a new effort to combat robocalls on Thursday, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The new pact is another step towards stopping completely these types of calls that reach consumer’s phones. Under the new agreement, companies are promising to work stop these illegal robocalls on their networks by working with state law enforcement to track down the origins of the calls.

Telecom companies have promised to give customers free call-blocking technology and to trace illegal calls.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein said, “Some of these carriers are doing some of these things. We need all carriers to do all of these things.” He also said that industry cooperation will hopefully shine a light on activity occurring in the dark.”

Participating companies include AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., T-Mobile US Inc., Sprint Corp., CenturyLink Inc., and seven other large carriers.
