Chart-topping pop star, The Voice coach, mom, wife. Kelly Clarkson isn’t a shrinking violet, she loves the stage and she lives to work. So she went and added “talk show host” to her bulging schedule.
The original American Idol dropped by Ellen on Monday for a chat about The Kelly Clarkson Show, which premiered last Monday (Sept. 9). It’s enjoyed healthy reviews (it scores an 8.5/10 on the IMDB) and solid ratings in syndications through the week on NBCUniversal, though that’s all lost on its host.
“I don’t understand ratings in television world,” she told Ellen DeGeneres. “Even in music…I don’t ever pay attention to charts either. It’s going to do me and work or it won’t.”
Clarkson also revealed it was her husband and manager Brandon Blackstock who convinced to do the variety show, which she sees as a vehicle to bring people together.
Ellen asked the question Kelly hears regularly on the street: With so much going on, why do a talk show? “Why not?,” she responded. “You’ve gotta matter until you don’t, people.”
During the first week of aired episodes, Clarkson covered a slew of covers, including Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” Jonas Brothers’s “Sucker” and Sia’s “Chandelier”.
It turns out, someone in the audience decides what song she’ll hit. And she’s not about to start singing her own anytime soon. “It’s a lot of work,” she admits, “but I genuinely love artists and I love music and celebrating art.”
And the toughest cover challenge in her career to-date? Covering Eminem’s “Lose Yourself,” by some distance. “It was so bad, but whatever. Challenge accepted. I’ll sing anything,” she says with a laugh.
Norwegian Cruise Lines recently named Clarkson as “godmother” to its cruise ship, Norwegian Encore. The busy entertainer got Ellen’s studio audience whipped up by gifting everyone in the room a free holiday. Nice.
