There Was Explicit Quid Pro In Call Between Trump And Ukraine’s President

President Donald Trump explicitly asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to find dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden during a July phone call, according to transcripts released by the White House.

The New York Times reported that Trump told Zelensky he had a “favor” to ask regarding the activities of the Biden family in Ukraine, along with help in discrediting former special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation — and he raised these matters in response to his counterpart’s mention of Ukraine acquiring more military equipment from the U.S.

Talking Points Memo noted that the transcript provides clear evidence of a quid pro quo: Zelensky brings up the issue of defense, and Trump responds by asking for a favor.

At one point, Zelensky brings up the prospect of further lethal military aid from the U.S. to Ukraine. It’s at that point when Trump immediately replies: “I would like you to do us a favor though because our country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it.”

Trump then goes on to bash the Russia investigation and former special counsel Robert Mueller and mentions the Bidens, saying at one point that the former vice president “stopped the prosecution [of his son’s company] and a lot of people want to find out about that.”

Zelensky affirms that he will look into the issues Trump raised, saying that the next chief prosecutor would be “100% my person,” adding that “He or she will look into the situation, specifically to the company that you mentioned in this issue.”
