Another non-Disney+ Marvel show has bitten the dust.
Deadline reports that Freeform has neglected to renew Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger for a third season, effectively cancelling the show. Deadline notes that the options on the cast expired last week so it’s unlikely that this current iteration of Cloak and Dagger would be revived at Disney+.
“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told,” Freeform said in a statement to Deadline. “We are also grateful to our incredible talent Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”
The writing for the future of Cloak And Dagger was on the wall due to recent behind-the-scenes changes of Marvel’s parent company Disney. Disney will launch a subscription streaming service called Disney+ on November 12, which will include many Marvel superhero TV shows, including The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki.
It seemed unlikely that Marvel would want to keep its “old era” of TV going with several shows spread out among several Disney properties, especially with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige upping his involvement with the Disney+ shows. The death of the previously era of Marvel TV was all but confirmed when Marvel TV czar Jeph Loeb stepped down from his duties. After the cancellation of Cloak And Dagger, the only pre-Disney+ Marvel shows to survive are Marvel’s Runaways on Hulu and Agents Of SHIELD on ABC (thought that will end with its upcoming seventh season).
And that’s a shame as when Den Of Geek US previously spoke with showrunner Joe Pokaski after the season two finale, he revealed he had quite a big plan for the series.
“Honestly, I have a seven-season plan, even if we have to tell it over the next twenty years,” Pokaski said.” But, honestly, I think this is kind of the end of the first couple chapters, and I feel it’s kind of like the end of Empire Strikes Back, if there were nine movies [in the franchise].”
It’s also just generally a bummer because Cloak And Dagger was a good show that served a certain younger portion of the Marvel audience. Cloak And Dagger followed the titular Cloak and Dagger duo of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph). Tandy and Tyrone came from disparate backgrounds but upon meeting each other they find that their mysterious superpowers are bound to each other, and they create a powerful, passionate team.
The good news is that the cancellation of Cloak And Dagger won’t serve as the definitive ending for Tandy and Tyrone just yet. The characters are set to crossover with Hulu’s Runaways series this winter.
