The 81 year old actress Jane Fonda was awarded the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award at last night’s Bafta Britannia Awards (October 25), but she couldn’t be there to pick it up in person. Instead, she sent a video message, thanking the organisers while being arrested in Washington DC for staging a climate protest.
Yesterday also marked the third Friday in a row that Fonda has been arrested for protesting climate change as part of her “Fire Drill Fridays”, which are in support of a Green New Deal.
(If you think “Fonda’s Fire Drill Fridays” echoes Greta Thunberg’s speeches then you’re probably right; the actress has named the teenage activist as an inspiration.)
71 year old actor Ted Danson was also arrested yesterday after joining the protests for the first time. He was seen marching with Fonda, chanting: “Get in motion, save the ocean.”
