Rand Paul Inspires Russian State Media To Name Alleged Whistleblower

Russian state media took a cue from Senator Rand Paul after the Kentucky Republican urged the American press to publish the identity of the intelligence community whistleblower who sparked Democrats’ impeachment inquiry.

According to The Daily Beast, not long after Paul “tweeted out an article that speculated in considerable detail about the identity of the whistleblower—with a photograph, a name, and details about the purported political history of a CIA professional—Russian state media followed suit.”

Kremlin-controlled news outlets TASS, RT, and Rossiya-1 all put out the same information Paul tweeted, only at least one added a lie into the mix. The Daily Beast reported that one Russian media outlet did not find Real Clear Investigations — the source of Paul’s information — to be highly credible and chose instead to say The Washington Post originally published the material. This is entirely untrue.

Russian media and analysts are also hoping that the impeachment inquiry — which centers on President Donald Trump’s alleged quid pro quo with Ukraine, holding up military assistance until the country committed to investigating his political opponents — will ultimately “turn into the hunt for Ukrainians” and cause a rift between Washington and Kyiv.

The Daily Beast noted a piece by RIA Novosti columnist Ivan Danilov:

“Some witnesses and sources of information, on which the charges against Donald Trump are based (and for which he, in fact, faces impeachment) are ‘Americans of Ukrainian descent’… At the same time, supporters of the current president are already demonstrating a clear willingness to use their background as the proof that they are ‘traitors to America.’ It isn’t as evident now, but after several months of actively promoting the thesis ‘Ukrainians are Clinton’s agents and the enemies of the United States, who are trying to overthrow Trump,’ a significant part of American society and the political elite will want nothing to do with Ukraine or the Ukrainian leadership, nor will they harbor any warm feelings toward the Ukrainian diaspora.”
