Southampton 1 – Norwich 0: Shane Long leaves it late to set up Arsenal tie in fourth round

Norwich’s Steven Naismith’s had headed a late equaliser in the first tie between these clubs at Carrow Road to force a replay that – if the line-ups were anything to go by – neither boss wanted.  Claude Puel and Alex Neil both made eight changes.  Given the wholesale changes, it was hardly surprising the game struggled to spark into life, although it did not help that Neil elected to go with a five-man defence, leaving Kyle Lafferty isolated as a lone striker for much of the game.  The Norwich boss was desperate to inject some confidence into his players after a dismal run that had brought just three wins in the last 16 games coming in, including Saturday’s defeat at Championship bottom club Rotherham.  And the visitors could indeed take some credit for the way they kept Southampton at arm...

ManU appoint counter-terrorism manager

Phil Noble Updated 18/01/2017 22:46 CET Manchester United have appointed a full-time counter-terrorism manager in what they believe to be a first in English club football. British media reported that the Premier League club had hired a former inspector from Greater Manchester Police’s specialist search unit. The Manchester Evening News said the new chief had started work “alongside the club’s current senior security team, with an emphasis on counter-terrorism and general security improvements”. The appointment of the unnamed officer at one of the world’s biggest and best-supported clubs comes amid heightened global concern after recent attacks in Europe and security breaches at United. Two stands at the 75,000-seater Old Trafford ground were evacuated just before the start of a league game...

Lincoln boss Danny Cowley didn't allow players to celebrate FA Cup shock win for long

Cowley’s non-League side earned a memorable 1-0 victory over Championship Ipswich to set up a fourth round tie with Brighton, who are on course for promotion into the Premier League. But the National League leaders are back in league action on Friday when Dover visit Sincil Bank – and they face a trip to Barrow next Tuesday before the Brighton clash. It meant Cowley warned his players it was business as usual, and Imps skipper Waterfall insisted there was no dissent from within the ranks. “We have two massive games before the Brighton game,” said Waterfall. “The gaffer told us he would let us enjoy the win for an hour, which was generous of him. But he is deadly serious.  “We look to Friday and Tuesday which are two massive games for us in the league. That’s the main aim. This is the icing...

Real frozen by Celta

Updated 18/01/2017 23:18 CET Celta handed Real Madrid their second straight defeat with a stunning 2-1 victory in their Copa del Rey quarterfinal first leg on a cold Wednesday night at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. Spain international Iago Aspas and Jonny sandwiched a Marcelo goal to give the Galicians the advantage heading into next week’s return leg in Vigo. All three goals came in a span of six minutes in the second half, notably with Jonny’s match-winner being scored just 20 seconds after Marcelo had drawn Real level. As for Real, after going unbeaten in 40 consecutive matches, Los Blancos have now tasted defeat twice in a span of three days. While Real did fail to finish off some chances, much of the credit can be given to the Celta defence, which did well to contain Cristiano Ronald...

Manchester United and Lyon agree fee for Memphis Depay transfer

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Manchester United and Lyon agreed a fee earlier this afternoon with only a few minor details left to settle. Memphis is reported to have already agreed a four-and-a-half year deal with the Ligue 1 outfit and could undergo a medical within the next few hours. Mohamed Bouhafsi, reporter for French broadcaster RMC, claims Lyon will pay £16m including bonuses for the Dutch international. The 22-year-old arrived from PSV Eindhoven in May 2015 for £25million during Louis van Gaal’s tenure. But an underwhelming first season at Old Trafford has been followed by a disappointing second campaign. He’s made just one start in all competitions since Jose Mourinho’s arrival, and failed to register a goal since February 2016. Last week Lyon coach Bruno Genesio said:...

Real have never fought back from 1-2 first-leg deficit

Updated 18/01/2017 23:56 CET If history is anything to go by, Real Madrid will have a fight on their hands if they are to progress to the semi-final stage of the Copa del Rey. The Merengues, who recently embarked on a 40-match unbeaten streak, have two defeats in two games after being stunned at home 2-1 against Celta Vigo. The Celestes opened the scoring just after the hour mark thanks to Iago Aspas but were quickly pegged back by Marcelo only for Jonny Castro to score the decisive goal moments after the equaliser to Eduardo Berizzo’s men an important victory. History, though, will be against Los Blancos as the capital club has been eliminated from the Copa Del Rey on the two other occasions they lost 1-2 in the first-leg in their own backyard. The first time they had lost 1-2 in the firs...

Sutton continue a tremendous FA Cup tradition to set up mouthwatering tie with Leeds

That was 47 years ago next Tuesday and Sutton chairman Bruce Elliott remembers it well, as he helped haul the wooden benches around the perimeter track at Gander Green Lane. The National League side’s historic late win at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday night was yet another chapter in the club’s superb cup tradition. Everyone remembers their most famous moment – beating first division Coventry in 1989 thanks to Matt Hanlan’s goal. This latest victory means they will face Championship side Leeds at the Lane on Sunday week – and the memories will flood back for Elliott. Don Revie’s Leeds were the best in the land when they arrived in Sutton in January 1970. They had just won the Football League and in that team that day at Gander Green Lane were the likes of Peter Lorimer, Billy Bremner, Johnny Gi...

Rare Lucas Leiva goal edges Liverpool past Plymouth

Updated 18/01/2017 23:32 CET Lucas Leiva ended a goal drought stretching back to 2010 and Divock Origi missed a late penalty as Liverpool beat fourth tier Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in an FA Cup third-round replay on Wednesday. Having been held to a goalless draw at Anfield 10 days ago, Liverpool again found Plymouth to be stubborn opponents who made light of the 67 places between the sides in the standings. Having conceded early, when Lucas headed home from a corner, Plymouth frustrated their Premier League visitors for most of the match and almost snatched a leveller when Jake Jervis shaved the post late in the second half. Origi had a tame penalty saved by Plymouth keeper Luke McCormick in the 86th minute, but there was no late sting in the tail for Juergen Klopp’s side who will face Wolverham...

Zidane: I'm the one responsible and I must find the solution

REUTERS Updated 19/01/2017 00:29 CET Celta Vigo handed Real Madrid their second defeat in four days on Wednesday evening, but Zinedine Zidane remains confident that Los Blancos can return to winning ways. The Frenchman accepted full responsibility for the 2-1 home loss and is targeting a better result in Saturday’s LaLiga clash with Malaga. “I’m the one responsible and I must find the solution,” he said in his post-match press conference. “I wasn’t surprised by the way Celta played, as we knew that they’re a team that can really hurt you. “I’m not worried, although it’s a bad moment. “We know that we can overcome it and we are going to overcome it. “We can go out [to Vigo] and change all of this, although we have a LaLiga match before that.” Asked if the Sevilla defeat had halted momentum ...

Rafa Benitez keeps sights set on promotion despite Newcastle's FA Cup progression

Rafa Benitez has warned Newcastle’s supporters that the attempt to get the club promoted will take priority over the FA Cup. Newcastle reached the fourth round of the competition for the first time in five seasons with a three-one win against Birmingham at St James’ Park in front of a crowd of almost 35,000. They now face Oxford as they bid for a place in the last 16 for the first time since 2006, but Benitez, who made eight changes to his side, revealed he will continue to save players for the push to get the club back into the Premier League. var qs=[]; for(var key in params) qs.push(key+’=’+encodeURIComponent(params[key])); var s = d.createElement(‘script’);s.type=’text/javascript’;s.async=true; var p = ‘https:’ == document.location.protoc...
